Map:

Work in progress.

The global coastlines are about 90 meters higher than they were in 2000, except for a few regions heavily protected by massive sea walls and pump systems. There is some evidence of orbital bombardment on the western coast of North America and western Russia. The late United States of America has broken into a handful of countries, and some previous USA territory has been absorbed into Canada and Mexico. Russia has undergone a similar cataclysm. The current major superpowers on Earth are China, India, and Brazil.

Climate Disaster Recovery:

Earth's global heating event caused the extinction of many organisms, and although there are extensive gene-banks for many of the known losses, reintroduction efforts have been the subject of a lot of controversy among ecologists. For many of the plants and animals that are extinct in the wild, the habitat they once lived in no longer exists, and reintroduction would have to put them in new areas. Critics say that this kind of experimental introduction should not be done on a mass scale to an already fragile biosphere. Other hot issues include concerns about the possible economic and safety risks of reintroducing insects, megafauna, and large predators near populated areas where they may damage agriculture or attack humans.

While reintroduction efforts stall, many zoos have been constructed in orbit of Earth. These structures, partly conservation efforts and partly tourist attractions, draw from genebanks to create huge living dioramas. Some of these ecosystems depict real ecosystems on Earth before industrialization, some resurrect older Pleistocene animals to recreate Earth’s prehistory, and some use genetic engineering and “ecosystem remixing” to depict fantasy ecosystems for the amusement of visitors.

Introduction of new climate-altering technology from bug ferrets has led to the first stages of terraforming Mars, and a lot of political infighting over the progression of its growing ocean, atmosphere, and magnetic shield. But the prospect of implementing that technology on Earth has been very unpopular, with most of Earth’s global powers focusing on recovery via industrial restructuring. The one exception has been CO2 refineries, large passively refrigerated towers of algae vats that catch wind and scrub it of carbon dioxide before release. They have been installed with greater frequency in windy, hot areas suffering from defoliation, as their energy and maintenance requirements are relatively cheap compared to more intense land management strategies. CO2 refineries make sugar and vegetable biomass as a byproduct.

Home system colonization:

Of the inner solar system, Earth, Venus, Mars, and their moons are the most heavily colonized. Automated outposts on Mercury are currently being established in Mercury's polar craters as part of a Venusian project to beam solar energy to the rest of the inner system.

The asteroid belt is home to some small space station cities and a booming automated mining industry, but most of the outer system's development is in orbit of Jupiter, either on its moons or in space stations like Nexus Jovia.
